‘Kande Pohe’ is a Marathi word, this is an authentic, traditional breakfast or evening snack made in Maharashtra state. Being an Maharashtrian it is prepared at our home frequently. ‘Kande Pohe’ is also popular as ‘Kanda Poha’ in Hindi. This is one of my personal favorite dish. It is simple and quick to make once all ingredients are gathered within few minutes its ready to serve. It is very irresistible when served hot and garnished with grated coconut and lemon.
‘Kande’ means Onion and ‘Pohe’ means flatten/beaten rice. Pohe is a very common recipe made across India but there are different styles to prepare according to the state’s in India. You will also find different types and variety of Pohe available in India or Market but for this recipe we need THICK POHE (thick flatten rice).
So, let’s start with the recipe. In this recipe I have added batata (potato) so it’s actually ‘Kande batate Pohe’ / Kanda Batata Poha’.
- 1 ½ Thick Pohe / beaten rice
- 1 Onion finely chopped
- 1 small potato cut into pieces/cubed
- 1 green chili cut into small pieces (as per your taste)
- 3tsp of peanuts
- 3tsp cooking oil
- 1tsp mustard seeds
- 1tsp jeera
- ¼ tsp turmeric
- Few curry leaves
- 1tsp salt (as per your taste)
- ¾ tsp sugar
- ¼ cup grated coconut (fresh)
- ¼ cup chopped coriander leaves
- ½ lemon / juice
Step 1: Firstly in a large mixing bowl take thick Pohe/Poha. Add water and soak it for a minute. (if the poha is very thick then soak it for 2minutes).
Step 2: Drain water with a help of strainer or colander and keep it aside to soften. Make sure you don’t oversoak it otherwise poha will turn mushy.
How to make Pohe
Step 3: Place a large kadai on stove. Add 3tsp of oil let it become warm and then add peanuts. roast the peanuts nicely on low/medium flame. roast peanuts until it turns crunchy. Remove it in a dish and keep it aside.
Step 4: In the same kadai i.e oil add 1tsp of mustard let it splutter, add 1tsp jeera, chopped green chili, curry leaves. Now, add potato piece and sauté it until they are turn soft and cooked. Then add finely chopped onion and sauté it for about 2mins until it shrinks little. Add turmeric powder and sauté it nicely.
Step 5: Now add soaked pohe/poha, 1tsp salt, and sugar. Mix it gently and nicely until its combined well. (Just make sure you don’t mix it repeatedly otherwise the poha may break).
Step 6: Add roasted peanuts and simmer the gas and cover the kadai with a lid. Let the poha cook for 3minutes so that all flavors blend nicely into it.
Step 7: put off the gas and after 2-3 minutes open the cover/lid.
Our delicious Maharashtrian Style ‘Kande Batate Pohe’ is ready to serve. Remove it in a serving plate.
Garnish it with fresh grated coconut, chopped coriander and slice of lemon.
- Make sure you use thick pohe/poha.
- It’s your choice if you want to add or skip potato but believe me it gives great taste.
- You can also add few green peas instead of peanuts.
- You can also add chopped coriander leaves and grated coconut at step6.
- Usually we serve Pohe with a cup of tea. Which is a great and famous combination in Maharashtra.
- This my method of making pohe/poha but every person has different style of cooking so the steps of preparing pohe will vary from person to person.
